Subject: Training class on X-Ray imaging for _____
Presenter: Trip Hale
Attendees:
_________
________
Session length: 2 hours. 1:00 – 3:00
Agenda: 1) Patient shielding
2) Basic operation of Radiographic equipment
3) Proper collimation
4) Positioning of most common procedures
5) Image quality review
6) Documentation of processes
7) Q and A
1) I confirmed that the practice had a full apron, ½ apron, thyroid collar, and calipers. All were present, and in good condition. We reviewed how aprons are to be used, and it is the responsibility of the operator to provide protection to the patient. It was emphasized that when a parent or guardian are required to be present, lead protection was to be used for them in the same manner. The practice has a policy that neither the operator nor patient that are possibly pregnant will be permitted in the X-Ray room during exposures. It was confirmed that all operators had personal dosimeters, and the RSO monitors these reports routinely.
2) After review, the staff had a very good basic understanding of how to measure patients to determine proper exposure factors, and how to setup the operator’s console. We reviewed the basic principles of producing X-Ray, and reaffirmed how to measure using the calipers for each body section. We reviewed the effects of KvP, and Mas on the image, and how these effect contrast, density, and image quality. The practice will limit their studies to Chest, extremities, and Abdomen imaging until additional training is provided.
3) The purpose and operation of the collimator was discussed. The importance of proper collimation was explained, and all displayed a good understanding of how to set the correct collimation, and SID for the body part being imaged.
4) We spent most of the time on positioning techniques, and protocols. The practice is ordering a pocket positioning book to be left in the operators control booth.
5) The practice is utilizing DR imaging, and the image quality is acceptable. The importance of proper positioning, measuring the patient for proper exposure factors, and image quality evaluation of EI number were reviewed and understood by all operators.
6) The RSO will annually review and document that the guidelines in the safety/procedure manual are being followed, and up to date. All operators are required to review the manual, and sign in the appropriate section, indicating that they have a good understanding of the proper and safe operation of the X-ray system.
7) The session concluded with a period of Q and A. All operators indicated they were comfortable with the topics discussed, and the practice will continue with a program of quarterly training sessions by myself.
